Who travels with Adventures in Good Company?
Adventures in Good Company welcomes all women. The majority of women are between 35 and 65, and we've had women as young as 20 and as old as 87. Women come from all over the US as well as Canada, England, and Germany. Some women are single, and some married or partnered. About 75% join our trips on their own, while others travel with someone. Stay-at-home moms, professionals, students, businesswomen, non-profit employees and retired women all regularly join us. We welcome lesbians and most of our participants are heterosexual. We think that the diversity of women who come on our trips is one of the greatest pleasures of our groups and group travel.
Why would I choose to go with a company rather than on my own?
Women choose to travel with us for many reasons. Some come to learn new skills so they can pursue activities on their own, or just to try something new. Some have trouble finding other women who share their love for adventure, others simply lack the time to do all the organizing that any trip requires and enjoy not having to hassle with the details. Other women love the idea of going on a trip where they aren't in charge, and can sit back and relax while someone else takes care of the planning and cooking the meals.
What kind of shape do I need to be in for your trips?
All of our trips are active and the majority require that you engage in some type of regular exercise before the trip, if you don't now. How much exercise? It really depends on the trip. The majority of our trips are suitable for women who exercise 3 to 5 times a week. Our backpacking trips and some of our hiking trips often require some additional conditioning, and our trips rated as 1 or 2 are suitable for anyone who is healthy, generally active, and has no significant mobility limitations. Every trip has a rating that suggests the kind of condition you should be in.
I don't like camping! Do you have any trips for me?
We certainly do. Of our 60 trips in 2016, 51 have no camping at all. Each trip description has an explanation of the accommodations for that trip.
I want to really push myself. What do you suggest?
On most of our trips there is a fairly high degree of flexibility, allowing you to choose for yourself exactly how much you want to do. The backpacking trips and any trips with a rating of 4 or 5 have inherently higher physical demands. Our best advice is to call us at 1-877-439-4042 and tell us what you do for exercise and what you're looking for.
What if I'm the oldest/youngest/heaviest/least in shape/only single woman/only mom on the trip?
You might be. Someone has to be the oldest/youngest/heaviest/least in shape person on the trip. And while the great majority of our trips have both single and non-single women, and moms and non-moms, sometimes they don't. But as long as you've chosen a trip that is appropriate for your fitness level, it doesn't matter if you're "different" in any of those ways - what you will share with everyone else is a desire to experience adventure in your life, and an appreciation of the joy and camaraderie of being in an all women's group.
Can you accommodate my specific dietary needs?
It depends on both the trip and on your specific needs. With advance notice, we can accommodate most dietary restrictions or allergies on our domestic trips, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten intolerant (we may or may not be able to accommodate Celiac disease). This is not always true on international trips so please contact us in advance if you have specific dietary needs. We've found that if you are willing to bring a couple of items to supplement what is on the menu (peanut butter is always good!)and possibly have less variety than you are used to at home, then dietary needs usually are no obstacle.
Do I pay a single supplement if I come by myself?
The majority of women come on our trips without knowing anyone else on it. You only pay a single supplement if you want to be assured of having a room to yourself. Otherwise we'll arrange roommates and switch several times during the trip. If you sign up with a friend and want to be sure you share a room for the entire trip, just let us know and we'll be glad to arrange it.
Can you give me a reference to someone who has been on the trip before?
Absolutely. We would be happy to give you names and emails of people who have agreed to be contacted.
Can I purchase an Adventures in Good Company gift certificate?
Yes, and we think the gift of adventure is one of the best you can give! Maybe you have a mom who wants to get outside a little more, or a daughter who deserves a graduation present. Maybe your wife could use some time just for herself, where someone else plans the meals. We can provide gift certificates in any amount, for specific trips or for use on any trip she is interested in. Just give us a call or email us.
Who are the guides?
All of our guides are experienced outdoors women who love being outdoors, enjoy teaching, and have been through either Woodswomen's or Adventures in Good Company's guide training. Our guides' primary focus is to make sure that your trip is fun, always being mindful of safety, and that you're able to learn whatever skills you choose. Each guide holds current CPR and Wilderness First Responder certifications. To learn more about our guides, click here. We believe that our guides are some of the best in the business- and our participants think so too! For most international trips we work in conjunction with local partners. In this case there is always at least one Adventures in Good Company guide working with the local guide(s).
How can I apply for a position with Adventures in Good Company?
We do not currently have any openings for guides. If you are interested in guiding in 2016 or beyond, please email us.
